What is Supervision?

"Supervision aims to facilitate the development of clinical and personal skills in which the therapist feels safe enough to be able to make mistakes". - CORST

Counselling and Psychotherapy Supervision

Undertaking therapeutic work can often bring one face to face with challenging material testing us professionally and personally and at times leaving one feeling deskilled and impotent. Supervision is a collaborative process undertaken by two professionals which gives rise to a rich, nourishing experience deepening the therapeutic work. In order for supervision to be most effective, it is important you find the right supervisor for you. It is important that you feel safe, supported, respected, not judged and challenged. At the heart of this is the importance of developing a trusting relationship.

Most professional bodies require counsellors and psychotherapists to attend and incorporate supervision into their clinical work. This is an ethical requirement which ensures not only that the client's best interests are being served but that practitioners have the support necessary to add value to their work.

Confidentiality

Some details of the client are shared within supervision however these are not traceable back to the individual client. Supervision will conform to the usual rules of confidentiality held within therapy and the only circumstances in which this would be breached is if the supervisee's work is deemed to be outside of the Codes of Ethics and Practice of BACP and UKCP.
